Foundations of Disability: An Introduction to Disability History, Rights, and Culture

Evelyn Lee Visiting Scholar Lecture in Cultural Competence & Diversity, UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. 

This lecture offers a foundational exploration of disability through legal, social, and cultural frameworks. Topics will address common barriers encountered by individuals with disabilities—including physical, attitudinal, systemic, and digital barriers. Emphasis will also be placed on the use of respectful terminology and disability etiquette tools.

  • Wendy Tobias, Ed.D, CRC, LPCC, Systemwide Disability Rights Director from the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) Systemwide Office of Civil Rights 
  • Isabel Alvarado, Systemwide Title IX Deputy Director at UC Office of the President
  • Cecile Puretz, Assistant Director, Disability Access and Inclusion, UCSF Office of Opportunity & Outreach
